Why we started INDIGO

I saw a need and INDIGO was my response.

I am a researcher and living in Lagos, it was difficult to find a serene work environment. The idea for INDIGO came from a desire to work from a space that met my needs for – serene, clean, spacious, natural light and plants. I had tried various co-working locations and did not find one that was tailored to the needs of a researcher – serenity and multiple spaces to enhance focus. Lagos residents will know that the city is vibrant which makes it quite noisy and finding quiet spaces to think is not easy. INDIGO was my response to that or, one might say, my protest.

I was lucky to find a space in the centre of Lagos – Costain and I am always amazed when people tell me it is too beautiful to be on the mainland. Our space is solar-powered and this fits in with the theme of serenity and also respect for the environment.

The design was important to me and I wanted everything to be made in Nigeria. Although that took a lot of work and time, I was able to achieve this with our furniture (natural wood, ethically sourced) and other items.

We also have a garden with various herbs, plants and trees – banana, plantain and soursop trees. I am always excited when the gardener tells me it is time to harvest bananas. I feel the same sense of pride when making lemon grass tea from lemon grass in the garden, or mint and moringa teas. We have allowed the bitterleaf and ugwu (pumpkin) to grow over to our neighbour’s and we are told they enjoy cutting them too.

If you can find a problem, think of the solution.

INDIGO is a green/eco-friendly shared workspace not a co-working space. We are running special offers for Masters and Postgraduate students, and creative sector researchers, as our contribution to the development of a strong research culture here in Lagos.
